Communities
Learning alone is the main reason self-taught people stall. Every verified success story in the research had people who reviewed their work and people who referred them. Vicki Boykis says her main growth came from "people better than me consistently review my code."
Where to get code reviewed with no team
- Exercism (free, forever). Submit a solution on the Python track and a volunteer mentor replies within days with one to three improvements, biggest issue first. Use it through Module A1.
- Open source, first PR. Look for "good first issue" and "first-timers-only" labels. Say it is your first contribution. Reviewing other people's PRs teaches a project's conventions faster than reading its docs. Mention a maintainer after about two weeks of silence.
- Post your project write-ups in the community for its topic and ask one specific question ("is my recall@k measurement leaking?"). Specific questions get answers; "feedback please" does not.
Communities by stage
| Stage | Community | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Modules A1 to A3 | Exercism, r/learnmachinelearning, the fast.ai Discord | Beginner-friendly, code review, "did I do this right" questions |
| Modules 03 to 06 (A4) | Hugging Face Discord (100k+ members): #introduce-yourself, course question channels, showcase channels, reading group | Where the smol-course and Agents Course live |
| Track A | r/Rag, r/AI_Agents, r/LLMDevs, the promptfoo and inspect-ai GitHub discussions | Production RAG and agent practitioners; vendor noise is high, filter for people showing numbers |
| Track B | GPU MODE Discord (about 31k members): weekly lectures, working groups, kernel leaderboard; r/CUDA | The beginner path r/CUDA regulars give is PMPP plus GPU MODE plus practice problems |
| Track C | ARENA cohorts, EleutherAI Discord (open, research-grade, "not for beginners"; DM project leads), Cohere Labs Open Science Community (free, weekly reading groups, a beginners-in-research track), LessWrong / Alignment Forum for safety work | Where research-grade work gets reviewed |
| Everyone | r/MachineLearning for paper discussion; local meetups for talks and referrals |
Accountability mechanics that work
- A public weekly log (one paragraph on your blog or in a Discord thread: what you built, what broke, what is next). The act of posting is the accountability.
- An accountability partner on the same module. Study-focused Discords match partners and run Pomodoro rooms.
- A streak you can see. Anki's own counter, a GitHub contribution graph, or a simple spreadsheet.
- A deadline with a person attached: "I will demo the RAG project to you on the 30th."
Structured programs worth applying to
- ARENA runs multiple short cohorts a year (9.0 ran October 5 to November 6, 2026). Criteria: care about AI safety, solid Python, a clear idea of how you would contribute. Apply via expression of interest when closed.
- MATS Fellowship: 12 weeks, Berkeley or London, $1,250 a week plus compute, no PhD required, acceptance roughly 4 to 7%. A 2026 admit reports the application took 35 to 40 hours; he was rejected by 8 of 9 streams and still got in. Apply to 3 to 5 streams.
- EleutherAI Summer of Open AI Research (2026 edition ran July 13 to August 16): online, mentored, aimed at people with little research experience. Watch for the 2027 round.
- Cohere Labs Open Science Community: apply, get a Discord invite within about a week, join a reading group.
